JKBOPEE NEET UG Counselling Guide: MBBS and BDS Admission for J&K Students
Short answer: JKBOPEE runs NEET UG counselling for J&K UT-quota MBBS and BDS seats on its official website, jkbopee.gov.in, while MCC (mcc.nic.in) separately runs All India Quota counselling. Candidates register, submit valid certificates by the deadline, check the provisional merit list, fill choices against the seat matrix and report to the allotted college, with later rounds for vacant seats. XEAL Education Works, an independent consultancy, helps students online and at our Srinagar office (2nd Floor, Nirmaan Complex, Barzulla Baghat, Srinagar 190005; +91 96973 60000) to track notices, prepare documents and plan choices.
Every year thousands of students from Jammu and Kashmir qualify NEET UG and then face a second, often more confusing step: counselling. For MBBS and BDS seats in the Union Territory, that counselling is run by the J&K Board of Professional Entrance Examinations (JKBOPEE) on its official website, jkbopee.gov.in. This guide explains, step by step, how JKBOPEE NEET UG counselling works, how it relates to the national MCC counselling, and where students most often go wrong.
XEAL Education Works is an independent admission consultancy based in Srinagar. We are not JKBOPEE, MCC or any college. Registration, login, merit lists, seat matrices and results are available only on the official websites linked in this article.
Two routes to an MBBS or BDS seat for J&K students
A J&K student who qualifies NEET UG can usually compete for seats through two separate counselling systems. They run in parallel, have their own registrations and their own rules, and taking part in one does not register you for the other.
| Counselling | Conducted by | Seats covered | Official website |
|---|---|---|---|
| All India Quota (AIQ), deemed and central institutions | Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), DGHS | AIQ share of government seats across India, plus deemed universities, central universities, AIIMS, JIPMER and others as notified | mcc.nic.in |
| J&K UT quota | JKBOPEE | UT-quota MBBS and BDS seats in government and private medical and dental colleges of J&K, as listed in the JKBOPEE seat matrix | jkbopee.gov.in |
The exact number of seats in each college and category changes every year and is published only in the official seat matrix. We do not quote seat counts here; always read the latest seat matrix on the JKBOPEE notice board.
Step-by-step: how JKBOPEE NEET UG counselling works
1. Qualify NEET UG
The exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency (neet.nta.nic.in). Only candidates who qualify NEET UG for the current year, and meet the eligibility conditions in the JKBOPEE notification, can take part in UT counselling. If you are still preparing, practise in a real exam interface with our NEET CBT mock test.
2. Watch the JKBOPEE notice board
After NEET UG results, JKBOPEE issues its own notifications for MBBS/BDS admission: the online application or registration notice, the information brochure or counselling guidelines, and later the merit list and round schedules. Each notification has a number and a date. Read the full PDF, not a summary on social media, because the details (deadlines, fees, certificate cut-off dates) are binding.
3. Register and submit your details and certificates
Candidates fill the online form on the official JKBOPEE portal, enter NEET UG details and upload the documents asked for. Category and sub-category certificates must usually be valid and submitted by the date fixed in the notification. Students who miss that date are commonly considered only under Open Merit for that cycle, so this is the single most important deadline to track. Our checklist of J&K certificates (domicile, category and others) is coming in a separate article in this series.
4. Provisional merit list and objections
JKBOPEE publishes a provisional merit list of eligible candidates, generally based on NEET UG scores and the categories accepted. A short window is normally given to report errors such as a wrong category or missing certificate. Check your name, rank, category and sub-category carefully and raise any objection within the official window.
5. Seat matrix and online choice filling
Before choice filling, JKBOPEE uploads the operative seat matrix for the round, listing seats college-wise and category-wise. Candidates then log in and fill preferences for colleges and courses (MBBS and/or BDS), usually after paying the counselling fee stated in the notice. Allotment is made on merit-cum-preference: your rank decides your turn, and your preference order decides which seat you get.
6. Allotment, reporting and document verification
Allotted candidates must report to the college within the given time with original documents. An allotment is provisional until the college verifies documents and eligibility. Failing to report usually means losing the seat.
7. Later rounds
Seats left vacant are offered in subsequent rounds (for example a second round for upgradation and vacant seats). Rules for later rounds can differ: earlier preferences may not carry forward, some candidates may be barred from the same institution, and fresh choice filling may be needed. Read each round's notice separately and do not assume the earlier rules still apply.
How MCC and JKBOPEE rounds interact
MCC rounds for AIQ and deemed seats usually start first, and state/UT rounds follow. Because the schedules overlap, students often hold a seat in one system while waiting for the other. Before you join, resign or upgrade a seat, check the exit, resignation and security-deposit rules in both the MCC and JKBOPEE notices; a wrong move can cost you a seat or your deposit. Our counselling support page explains how we plan this sequence with families.
Government vs private colleges in J&K counselling
JKBOPEE counselling covers government medical and dental colleges in the UT and private institutions whose seats are included in its seat matrix. Private colleges can have different categories, such as open merit, management and NRI seats, with very different fees. Even these seats are allotted through counselling on NEET merit; there is no legitimate "direct admission" outside the official process. Fees must be taken from the official seat matrix, fee notification or the college's official website.
Common mistakes J&K students make
- Late or invalid category certificates. A certificate obtained after the cut-off date usually cannot be used for that year's counselling.
- Registering only in one system. Skipping MCC AIQ counselling means missing government seats outside J&K and deemed universities.
- Filling too few choices. A short list can leave you without a seat even when your rank could have got one.
- Trusting WhatsApp forwards. Dates and rules change; only the official notice counts.
- Paying anyone for a "guaranteed seat". No consultant, agent or college can legally guarantee or sell an MBBS seat outside counselling.
What if you do not get a seat?
Students who miss out in India can consider another attempt at NEET, BDS or allied health courses (also counselled by JKBOPEE), or MBBS abroad at a university that meets the National Medical Commission's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate rules (see nmc.org.in). What is the official website for JKBOPEE NEET UG counselling?
The official website is jkbopee.gov.in. Registration, login, merit lists, seat matrices and allotments are published only there. XEAL Education Works is an independent consultancy and not part of JKBOPEE.
Do I need to register separately for MCC and JKBOPEE counselling?
Yes. MCC (mcc.nic.in) conducts All India Quota and deemed university counselling, and JKBOPEE conducts J&K UT-quota counselling. Each has its own registration, fee and schedule.
What happens if my category certificate is late?
JKBOPEE notices usually fix a date by which valid category certificates must be submitted. Candidates who miss it are commonly considered under Open Merit for that cycle. Always check the exact rule in the current notification.
Can I get direct MBBS admission in a J&K private college?
No legitimate direct admission exists outside counselling. Private college seats, including management and NRI seats where they exist, are allotted on NEET UG merit through the official counselling process.
How many MBBS seats are there in J&K and what are the cut-offs?
Seat numbers and closing ranks change every year. Check the latest operative seat matrix and allotment lists on jkbopee.gov.in and mcc.nic.in rather than relying on unofficial figures.
