Study MBBS in Iran: a guide for Indian students

Iran has a long tradition of medical education, with large government universities of medical sciences in Tehran, Shiraz, Isfahan, Mashhad and other cities. Several run international programmes for foreign students, and fees are moderate.

XEAL Education Works currently helps students with admission to Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences, Arak University of Medical Sciences and Islamic Azad University (Tehran). Their fees are shown in the table above.

Course duration and structure

Total durationAbout 6–7 years, including internship, depending on the university
Medium of instructionEnglish in international programmes (confirm for clinical years)
IntakeUsually September; some universities also have a February intake
Licensing in IndiaFMGE (until NExT is introduced), then a 12-month internship in India

Why Indian students consider Iran

  • Established government universities with large teaching hospitals.
  • Moderate fees, usually quoted in US dollars.
  • High patient load in university hospitals.

Language: check this carefully

Basic science subjects are taught in English in international programmes, but patients in Iran speak Persian (Farsi), and clinical years often involve Persian. NMC rules require the whole course to be English-medium, so confirm in writing how the clinical years and the internship are taught before you apply. We check this with each university for you.

NMC rules every Indian student must check

To practise in India after studying abroad, your degree must meet the National Medical Commission's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations, 2021. Before you pay any fees, make sure the university and programme meet all of these:

  • NEET-UG qualified: you must qualify NEET-UG to study MBBS abroad. The NEET result is accepted for foreign admission for three years.
  • At least 54 months of study at one university, followed by a 12-month internship at the same university.
  • English medium for the whole course.
  • The degree must let you register as a doctor in that country, on the same terms as local graduates.
  • The course must be completed within 10 years of joining.
  • Back in India, you must pass the licensing exam (currently FMGE, until NExT is introduced) and complete a 12-month supervised internship in India.

XEAL Education Works checks these points for every university before we recommend it to you.
