Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) is Iran's leading public medical university, based in the capital, Tehran. For international students it offers a 7-year Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) and a 5–5.5-year English-taught MBBS.

The official TUMS fee page lists USD 10,000 per year as normal tuition for both programmes, and relief tuition of USD 5,000–7,500 per year depending on the student's GPA and scores. An internship fee may apply separately. The total shown here uses the normal rate for a 5.5-year MBBS; with relief tuition the total is about USD 27,500–41,250.

Medicine for international students is taught in English. Iranian universities offer the Doctor of Medicine (M.D., about 7 years) and, at some universities, an MBBS (about 5.5–6 years), both including clinical training and internship.

  • Basic sciences (years 1–2½): Anatomy, Histology, Physiology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Persian language for patient communication
  • Physiopathology (about 1½ years): Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Semiology, systems-based medicine
  • Clinical clerkship (externship): Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Community Medicine, Forensic Medicine, ENT, Ophthalmology, Dermatology and more
  • Internship: 12–18 months of supervised work in the university's teaching hospitals

Clinical training usually involves Persian (Farsi) with patients. Confirm in writing whether clinical years and internship are in English, as NMC requires English medium.

Fees for the 2026-27 intake as listed by XEAL Education Works (Iran MBBS fee sheet 2026-27). Tuition only: hostel, food, insurance, visa, medical check-up, translation, registration and travel are extra unless stated. Fees can change each session; confirm the final amount from the university's official offer letter / fee contract before making any payment.

  • NEET-UG: Indian students must qualify NEET-UG. The result is accepted for MBBS abroad for three years.
  • Class 12 marks: Physics, Chemistry and Biology, usually at least 50% (40% for reserved categories); at least 17 years old by 31 December.
  • Application: through the university's international office; some universities hold an interview.
  • Documents: Class 10 and 12 mark sheets and certificates, NEET scorecard, passport, photographs.
  • Admission letter and visa: the university issues an admission/invitation letter, then you apply for a student visa.

Before paying, ask for in writing:

  • Official offer/admission letter and itemised fee contract (tuition, hostel, insurance, registration, refund policy)
  • Medium of instruction certificate covering all years, including clinical postings and internship
  • WDOMS (World Directory of Medical Schools) listing
  • Internship / clinical rotation details: NMC FMGL Regulations 2021 need at least 54 months of study plus a 12-month internship at the same foreign institution, in English, with the right to register/practise in that country
  • Current student-visa processing, fee-payment (remittance) channel and the Government of India travel advisory for Iran
