MBBS in Malaysia for Indian students

Malaysia offers English-taught medical degrees at public and private universities, including branch campuses of Monash University (Australia) and Newcastle University (UK). Programmes are accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and recognised by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC). Fees are higher than in Russia or Central Asia but lower than in the UK or Australia, and the climate, food and large Indian community make it comfortable for Indian students.

Eligibility

  • NEET-UG: qualifying NEET-UG is compulsory for Indian students studying medicine abroad.
  • Class 12: high marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Malaysia applies a national minimum entry standard for medicine (around an 85% average for Indian Class 12), and some universities ask for more.
  • English: IELTS (usually 6.0 or higher) or an equivalent test may be required.
  • Interview: many universities interview applicants before making an offer.

The internship question

NMC's FMGL Regulations 2021 require a 12-month internship in the same country and institution where you studied. In Malaysia, housemanship (internship) posts are generally reserved for Malaysian citizens, so an international graduate may not be able to complete it there. Before accepting any offer, ask the university in writing how an Indian student will meet this requirement. Also check where each phase is taught, as some programmes include study outside Malaysia. XEAL Education Works reviews this with you during counselling.

NMC rules every Indian student must check

To practise in India after studying abroad, your degree must meet the National Medical Commission's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations, 2021. Before you pay any fees, make sure the university and programme meet all of these:

  • NEET-UG qualified: you must qualify NEET-UG to study MBBS abroad. The NEET result is accepted for foreign admission for three years.
  • At least 54 months of study at one university, followed by a 12-month internship at the same university.
  • English medium for the whole course.
  • The degree must let you register as a doctor in that country, on the same terms as local graduates.
  • The course must be completed within 10 years of joining.
  • Back in India, you must pass the licensing exam (currently FMGE, until NExT is introduced) and complete a 12-month supervised internship in India.

XEAL Education Works checks these points for every university before we recommend it to you.
