Study MBBS in China: a guide for Indian students
China has some of Asia's largest and best-equipped medical universities, and for many years thousands of Indian students studied MBBS there. Today, only a specific list of universities is allowed to teach MBBS in English to international students, and students must also learn Chinese for their clinical years.
XEAL Education Works currently helps students with admission to Anhui Medical University in Hefei, Anhui province. Its fee is shown in the table above.
Course duration and structure
| Total duration | About 6 years: 5 years of study plus a 1-year internship in China |
|---|---|
| Medium of instruction | English for teaching, plus Chinese (HSK) for clinical work |
| Intake | Usually September |
| Licensing in India | FMGE (until NExT is introduced), then a 12-month internship in India |
Important rules for China
Only listed universities: China's Ministry of Education publishes the list of universities allowed to teach MBBS in English to international students, and the Indian Embassy in Beijing advises students to apply only to these. Chinese language: students usually must pass the HSK Chinese-language exam (often HSK 4) before clinical training, because patients speak Chinese. Internship: NMC rules require the 12-month internship to be completed in China, at the same university.

- A valid passport.

NMC rules every Indian student must check
To practise in India after studying abroad, your degree must meet the National Medical Commission's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations, 2021. Before you pay any fees, make sure the university and programme meet all of these:
- NEET-UG qualified: you must qualify NEET-UG to study MBBS abroad. The NEET result is accepted for foreign admission for three years.
- At least 54 months of study at one university, followed by a 12-month internship at the same university.
- English medium for the whole course.
- The degree must let you register as a doctor in that country, on the same terms as local graduates.
- The course must be completed within 10 years of joining.
- Back in India, you must pass the licensing exam (currently FMGE, until NExT is introduced) and complete a 12-month supervised internship in India.
XEAL Education Works checks these points for every university before we recommend it to you.
