Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada runs state counselling for Competent Authority Quota, management and NRI seats, while MCC fills the 15% All India Quota, deemed university and central seats. XEAL Education Works helps students from Andhra Pradesh online and by phone.

How MBBS and BDS admission works in Andhra Pradesh

Every MBBS and BDS seat in Andhra Pradesh is filled on the basis of the NEET UG score. There is no separate state medical entrance test. What decides where you can study is the counselling route. A part of the seats is filled through national counselling run by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), and the large majority of seats in the state's government and private colleges are filled through state counselling run by Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences (Dr. NTR UHS), Vijayawada.

This guide explains NEET counselling in Andhra Pradesh in plain language for students and parents. Dates, fees, seat numbers, reservation details and cut-offs change from year to year, so always confirm them in the current Dr. NTR UHS notification and prospectus before you act.

Who runs NEET UG counselling in Andhra Pradesh?

State quota counselling for MBBS and BDS in Andhra Pradesh is conducted by Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada, the state health university. Its admission notifications, prospectus and regulations, merit positions, web option schedules and allotment lists are published on the university website, drntr.uhsap.in. The online application for UG medical admissions is also hosted on the university's admission portal on aptonline.in, which is linked from the university website.

The university issues separate notifications for different groups of seats:

  • Competent Authority Quota (Convenor Quota): the state quota seats in government medical and dental colleges (after the 15% All India Quota is taken out) and the Category A seats in private unaided non-minority and minority medical and dental colleges affiliated to Dr. NTR UHS.
  • Category B (Management Quota): management seats in private colleges, with their own notification, merit list and a much higher fee.
  • Category C (NRI Quota): NRI seats in private colleges, with separate eligibility and documentation rules.

Applying under one notification does not automatically enter you for another. If you want to be considered for Competent Authority seats as well as management quota seats, you must apply under each notification separately within its own window.

MCC 15% All India Quota and central seats

Alongside state counselling, the Medical Counselling Committee of the Directorate General of Health Services runs counselling on mcc.nic.in for:

  • the 15% All India Quota seats in government medical and dental colleges in Andhra Pradesh and every other state,
  • seats in central institutions such as AIIMS (including AIIMS Mangalagiri) and other institutions placed under MCC each year,
  • deemed universities and central universities across India.

A student from Andhra Pradesh can register for both MCC counselling and Dr. NTR UHS counselling,. The rules on joining, resigning, upgrading and free exit are strict in both systems, so read the current MCC information bulletin and the Dr. NTR UHS regulations before accepting or leaving any seat.

Eligibility and local status in Andhra Pradesh

To take part in Andhra Pradesh state counselling you must qualify NEET UG with at least the minimum percentile for your category, meet the age and qualifying examination (Intermediate or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English) conditions, and meet the state's local or unreserved eligibility rules.

In general terms, Andhra Pradesh follows a local area system under the state's admission orders. The state is divided into local areas (the Andhra University area and the Sri Venkateswara University area), and most Competent Authority seats are reserved for local candidates of the respective area. A candidate is usually treated as local on the basis of a set number of consecutive years of study in the area before the qualifying examination, or residence there for candidates who did not study in the state. A smaller share of seats is kept unreserved, which candidates with long residence in Andhra Pradesh, children of eligible employees working in the state, and other categories listed in the prospectus may claim with the right certificates.

These rules are detailed and have been revised in recent years, so do not rely on what an older batch was told. Read the eligibility section of the current prospectus, and if your case is borderline, get it clarified before the application window closes. Students who do not qualify under state rules can still apply for All India Quota and deemed university seats through MCC, and may be eligible for management or NRI quota seats where the current notification allows.

Reservation in state seats follows Government of Andhra Pradesh orders and covers categories such as SC, ST, BC groups and EWS, along with horizontal reservation for women, persons with benchmark disabilities and special categories such as CAP, NCC and sports. Certificates for these claims must be issued in the format the prospectus asks for.

Government vs private vs deemed colleges

College typeHow seats are filledWhat to keep in mind
Government medical and dental colleges15% through MCC, the rest through Dr. NTR UHS Competent Authority QuotaLowest fees and highest competition; local area rules apply to state seats
Private non-minority and minority collegesCategory A through Competent Authority counselling; Category B and C through separate Dr. NTR UHS notificationsFees differ sharply between Category A, B and C; check the current state fee order
Deemed universitiesThrough MCC counsellingOpen to students from all states; fees are set by each institution and are usually high
Central institutions such as AIIMSThrough MCC counsellingVery high NEET ranks needed; low fees

Step-by-step: NEET counselling in Andhra Pradesh

  1. Qualify NEET UG and download your rank card from neet.nta.nic.in.
  2. Watch the Dr. NTR UHS website for the notification for the Competent Authority Quota, and separately for Category B and C if they interest you.
  3. Apply online on the university portal, pay the processing fee and upload all mandatory certificates. The university accepts online applications only and asks candidates to fill the form themselves.
  4. Check the provisional merit position and the list of rejected or objected applications. Raise any correction within the time allowed.
  5. Exercise web options when the schedule is announced. Read the current rules on how options are carried across phases, because a carelessly ordered list can lock you into a seat you did not want.
  6. Check the allotment, download the allotment order, pay the fee and report to the college with original documents within the deadline.
  7. Follow later phases, including any free exit, retention, mop-up and stray vacancy rounds, as notified.

Documents to keep ready

  • NEET UG admit card and rank card
  • Class 10 marks memo (as proof of date of birth) and Intermediate or equivalent marks memo
  • Study certificates from Class 6 to Intermediate, and the transfer certificate
  • Local status certificate or residence proof, where required
  • Integrated community (caste) certificate, EWS certificate or income certificate, if claiming reservation
  • UDID card and disability certificate for PwBD candidates, as specified in the prospectus
  • Special category certificates such as NCC, CAP or sports, if applicable
  • Aadhaar card, recent photograph and signature

The prospectus marks some uploads as mandatory, and an application missing them can be rejected.

Common mistakes Andhra Pradesh students make

  • Assuming local status: study and residence history decides your local area. Check it before you apply, not after the merit list.
  • Missing a separate notification: Competent Authority, management and NRI seats have different applications.
  • Poorly ordered web options: list colleges in true order of preference and include realistic choices.
  • Trusting middlemen: the university itself warns that allotments are made only on NEET merit and the options you exercise. Nobody can buy you a Competent Authority seat.
