Short answer: MBBS and BDS admission in Telangana is based on NEET UG. Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS) runs state counselling for Competent Authority Quota and Management Quota seats, while MCC fills the 15% All India Quota, deemed university and central seats. How MBBS and BDS admission works in Telangana

Every MBBS and BDS seat in Telangana is filled on the basis of the NEET UG score. There is no separate state medical entrance test. What changes from one seat to another is the counselling route: some seats are filled through national counselling run by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), and most seats in the state's government and private colleges are filled through state counselling run by Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS), Warangal. Understanding both routes, and registering for the right ones, is the first step to a good MBBS admission in Telangana.

This guide explains NEET counselling in Telangana in plain language for students and parents. Exact dates, fees, seat numbers and cut-offs change every year, so always confirm them in the current KNRUHS notification and prospectus before you act.

Who runs NEET UG counselling in Telangana?

State quota counselling for MBBS and BDS in Telangana is conducted by Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS), the state health university. KNRUHS publishes the admission notifications, the provisional merit lists, the web option schedules and the college-wise allotment lists on its official website, knruhs.telangana.gov.in.

KNRUHS usually runs separate notifications for two broad groups of seats:

  • Competent Authority Quota: state quota seats in government medical and dental colleges, together with the competent authority seats in private medical and dental colleges affiliated to KNRUHS. These are generally open only to candidates who qualify as local candidates of Telangana under the state rules.
  • Management Quota: the management seats in private and minority colleges, which have their own eligibility conditions, merit list and much higher fees. KNRUHS also conducts counselling rounds for these seats, including later mop-up and stray vacancy phases.

Read each notification separately. Registering for one quota does not automatically register you for the other.

MCC 15% All India Quota and central seats

In addition to state counselling, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) of the Directorate General of Health Services conducts counselling on mcc.nic.in for:

  • the 15% All India Quota seats in government medical and dental colleges in Telangana and other states,
  • seats in central institutions such as AIIMS, and other institutions placed under MCC each year,
  • deemed universities and central universities across India.

A student from Telangana can take part in both MCC counselling and KNRUHS counselling. Many families register in both to keep more options open. However, the rules on resigning a seat, joining, and moving between rounds are strict, so read the MCC information bulletin and the KNRUHS notification carefully before you accept or leave any seat.

Eligibility and local candidate status

To apply in Telangana state counselling, you must qualify NEET UG with at least the minimum percentile set for your category, meet the age and qualifying examination requirements, and meet the state's local candidate rules for the quota you are applying under.

In general terms, local status for Telangana is decided by government orders on medical admissions and is usually linked to study in recognised institutions in Telangana for a set number of years before the qualifying examination, or residence in the state for candidates who did not study there. There are also provisions for special cases such as children of certain employees working outside the state. These rules have changed in recent years, so do not rely on what an older batch or a relative was told. Check the eligibility section of the current KNRUHS prospectus, and if your case is borderline, get it clarified before the registration window closes.

Students who do not meet the Telangana local rules can still apply through MCC for All India Quota and deemed university seats, and may be eligible for management quota seats as allowed by the current notification.

Government vs private vs deemed colleges

College typeHow seats are filledWhat to keep in mind
Government medical and dental colleges15% through MCC, the rest through KNRUHS Competent Authority QuotaLowest fees, highest competition, local candidate rules apply to state seats
Private and minority collegesCompetent authority seats and management quota seats through KNRUHSFees differ sharply between quotas; fees are fixed by the state, so check the current fee order
Deemed universitiesThrough MCC counsellingOpen to students from all states; fees are usually high and are set by each institution
Central institutions such as AIIMSThrough MCC counsellingVery high NEET scores are usually needed

Step-by-step: KNRUHS state counselling

  1. Watch the official website. After the NEET UG result, KNRUHS releases the notification for online registration. Keep checking knruhs.telangana.gov.in rather than relying on forwarded messages.
  2. Register online and pay the fee. Fill in your details exactly as they appear in your NEET and school records, and pay the non-refundable registration fee stated in the notification.
  3. Upload certificates. Scanned originals are uploaded during registration. Upload clear, complete scans. Mistakes here are a common reason for problems later.
  4. Check the provisional merit list. KNRUHS publishes provisional merit lists. Check your rank, category and local status, and raise any objection within the time allowed.
  5. Exercise web options. When the web option schedule is announced, list colleges in your true order of preference. Options are usually called for each phase.
  6. Check the allotment and report. If you are allotted a seat, download the allotment order, pay the fee as instructed and report to the college within the deadline. Original documents are checked at the time of admission.
  7. Follow later phases. Second phase, mop-up and stray vacancy phases fill seats left vacant. Read the rules for each phase, because eligibility to take part may depend on what you did in earlier rounds.

Documents usually required

The exact list is given in each notification, but Telangana MBBS and BDS applicants are usually asked for:

  • NEET UG admit card and score card
  • Class 10 certificate or marks memo as proof of date of birth
  • Intermediate (Class 12) marks memo and transfer certificate
  • Study certificates for the classes specified in the notification
  • Residence certificate, where required instead of study certificates
  • Caste or community certificate, EWS certificate and income certificate, where applicable
  • Minority, PwD, NCC, sports or other special category certificates, where applicable
  • Recent passport-size photograph and specimen signature

Category certificates must usually be issued by the competent authority of Telangana and be valid for the current admission year. Start collecting these well before the NEET result.

Common mistakes Telangana families make

  • Assuming local status. Living in Hyderabad today does not by itself make a student a local candidate. Check the study and residence rules in the prospectus.
  • Registering only for MCC or only for KNRUHS. Doing both, where eligible, gives more chances.
  • Filling too few options. Students often list only a handful of colleges and then miss a seat they would have been happy with.
  • Ignoring seat-leaving rules. Joining a seat in one counselling and then trying to move can carry conditions. Read the rules before you join or resign.
  • Trusting unofficial lists and agents. No one can guarantee an MBBS seat outside the official merit-based process. Be very careful with anyone who promises a seat for money.
